Job Overview and Responsibilities

As an Operations Research Analyst at United Airlines, you'll play a critical role in developing and implementing advanced analytical models to drive business decisions. Your work will be instrumental in solving complex problems, optimizing operations, and contributing to the company's bottom line. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing methodologies and techniques to define and solve management problems through quantitative analysis and analytical models using operations research, machine learning, and structured programming languages.
  • Identifying, investigating, and resolving significant complex issues using big data, operations research, and machine learning principles.
  • Utilizing business process understanding to identify and implement operations research solutions that result in significant bottom-line contributions.
  • Building and developing operations research/development numerical model applications and providing client support using operations research data.
  • Participating in model design, model development, and model implementation for multiple concurrent projects and communicating with product delivery groups.
  • Planning analytical approaches and developing hypotheses to test, understanding the limitations of analysis, and anticipating workgroup questions to data and approach.
  • Identifying solution quality risks and on-time opportunities, understanding the business value, process, and expectations before focusing on the choice of a technical solution.
  • Providing ongoing analytical support to client associations and communicating results to management and clients.
  • Contributing to deck content and building the narrative for the deck with guidance to summarize findings, developing and delivering presentations aligned with AI principles.
  • Staying informed about the latest scientific techniques and research in the operations research and analytics fields.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • A postgraduate education (PhD or ABD) in Operations Research or a related quantitative discipline, including quantitative analysis and application of advanced operations research principles.
  • Coursework or work experience with mathematical programming techniques.
  • Coursework or work experience in model prototyping through the use of optimization toolkit(s) such as CPLEX, AMPL, or OPL.
  • Coursework or work experience with C, C++, Java, R, Python, or other structured programming languages.
  • Strong business, technical, verbal/written communication, presentation, and sales skills, with adaptability to a changing business environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with clients.
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Successful completion of an interview to meet job capabilities.
  • Reliable, consistent attendance is a fundamental capability of the position.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US for any employer.

Preferred Qualifications

While not mandatory, the following qualifications are highly preferred:

  • A minor in computer science or formal advanced computer science coursework.
  • Periods of professional involvement in an analytical field.
  • Stretches of aircraft business experience.
  • Designing and programming/coding data structures for large-scale computer models.
