Duties and Responsibilities

As an Experienced Materials Handler, you will be responsible for:

• Loading and unloading freight on or from trucks or other conveyances and packing and unpacking boxes, cartons, and other containers
• Determining quantities of material on hand by counting, weighing, or measuring
• Identifying freight by piece and item on Government Bills of Lading (GBL), DD1348's, Material Movement Documents (MMD), Delivery Control List (DCL), requisitions, carrier arrival notices, and other transportation documents
• Performing count and damage record discrepancies
• Processing material from receiving areas to storage areas
• Operating material handling equipment (MHE) such as forklifts, trucks (gas and electric), hand and electric pallet trucks, pallet jacks, and stock picking carts
• May be required to shovel snow and sand walkways, loading areas, docks; and sweep floors, loading docks, ramps, and outside areas to perform duties
• May be required to attend nuclear, radiological, sub-safe/level I, Controlled Industrial Material (CIM), and Scope of Certification (SOC) training to be qualified to handle all types of materials

• Security Requirements: Non-Critical Sensitive with Confidential Access
• Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, where reciprocity cannot be applied; unfavorably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal
• Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Non-Exempt
• Selective Service Requirement: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service
• Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized
• Bargaining Unit Status: Yes
• Pre-Employment Physical: Required
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license

Essential Skills and Competencies

To succeed in this role, you will need:

• Ability to do the work of a Materials Handler without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as handle materials; carry weights up to 44 pounds unassisted; operate power and hand tools, and have the ability to measure materials
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• Ability to lift, carry, and move materials up to 50 feet
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
