Industrial Design Intern

About the position We are looking for an Industrial Design Intern to join our Fortune Brands Innovations Industrial Design team for the 2025 summer term with a desire to revolutionize the way people experience our products in and around the home. You will have the privilege of collaborating with an award-winning global team to support our brands such as Moen, House of Rohl, Masterlock, Sentry Safe, Thermatru, Larson, Yale, August and many more. As a member of the Industrial Design team, you will help support in the development of meaningful innovations and distinctive collections that serve a wide range of user needs and aspirations. This is a hybrid role located at our Moen HQ office in North Olmsted, Ohio with 3 days in the office per week.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple fast-paced projects at one time within all Fortune Brands Innovations product categories including, plumbing, outdoors, security, and connected products, with mentorship from the FBIN industrial designers.
  • Assist the lead industrial designers on cross-functional FBIN project teams with design integrity and a passion for meaningful collaboration to balance what is desirable to our end users, what is viable for the business goals, and what is feasible to manufacture.
  • Support each phase of the design process across discovery research, initial concept development and testing, CAD development, and final design story documentation.
  • Apply advanced elements of art and principles of design to form, color, finishes, and graphics with regard to user-centered functionality and ergonomics.
  • Create sketches and 3D prototypes to explore ergonomics, human factors, and form issues.
  • Help develop cohesive product collections that possess shared strong visual collection language elements.
  • Define refined concepts with detailed color, material, and finish documentation.
  • Communicate with cross functional teams including engineering, product owners, and project managers to ensure concepts are clearly understood.
  • Assist with creating presentations that clearly communicate the authentic design story for each project to help inform commercialization strategies and marketing content creation.
  • Propel and evolve each of the brands visual brand language to meaningfully embody their core values.
  • Develop impactful, award-winning designs to elevate FBIN brands.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute responsibilities listed above.
  • Skill and experience in 2-D hand + digital sketching and rendering skills: Programs: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator), Sketchbook Pro, Etc.
  • 3-D digital modeling and rendering skills: Programs: Solidworks, Keyshot.
  • Solidworks experience is preferred as this will be the mandatory CAD package for all FBIN projects to ensure efficient collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Strong verbal and visual presentation skills: Programs: InDesign, PPT, Miro.
  • Ability to clearly communicate design inspiration and intent internally to project teams and leadership teams as well as externally to customers and merchants.
  • A strong work ethic and ability to support multiple complex and fast-paced projects at once.
  • A keen eye for global trend forecasting across macro cultural drivers, fashion, architecture, furniture, housewares, kitchen, bath, and CMF.
  • A strong passion for thoughtful form development across ALL décor styles, from traditional to contemporary.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and demonstrated ability to produce great designs while working with tight manufacturing constraints.
  • Flexible, creative, resilient, and driven to maintain design excellence from project start to finish.
  • Team-focused attitude, with the desire to share knowledge, assist others, and work together to achieve great results.
