About the Data Engineer – Analytics & AI Enablement position

Within the Applied Intelligence department, the Data Engineer – Analytics & AI Platforms uses a variety of methods to transform structured and unstructured data into usable data systems, including preparing data for analytics, artificial intelligence, agents, and modeling. This role constructs and maintains data pipelines and structures that support data-driven analysis, AI, and agentic solutions. The Data Engineer evaluates data quality, aligns data systems with established standards and business goals, and ensures analysts, AI developers, and business stakeholders have access to valid and reliable data.

This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon’s corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Data Engineer – Analytics & AI Enablement – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate inbound data for completeness, reliability, veracity, published standards, and agreed-upon specifications from external sources, including partners and clients.
  • Ingest laboratory and medical claims data into Snowflake databases for analytical use.
  • Extract and ingest structured data from sources such as SQL databases, CSV, JSON, and other formats into Snowflake and the enterprise data lake using AWS Iceberg.
  • Extract, process, and ingest unstructured and semi-structured data from document- and text-based sources into Snowflake and the data lake.
  • Curate and prepare data for advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and data science initiatives, including use within Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex tools.
  • Build and maintain data systems and pipelines that enable reliable, repeatable data onboarding and movement through medallion architectures.
  • Interpret data trends and patterns to support analytical and business insights.
  • Assist in the development of data engineering pilots and tools using SQL, Python, AWS Glue, Snowflake, and Terraform.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve data quality, integrity, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with team members across multiple concurrent projects.

Data Engineer – Analytics & AI Enablement – Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with SQL data management and database design.
  • Experience working with data lakes and medallion data-warehousing architectures.
  • Familiarity with cloud service offerings, including AWS.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to learn new tools, techniques, and methods.

Data Engineer – Analytics & AI Enablement – Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare industry experience, including pharmacy, managed care, health plans, hospitals, or pharmaceutical environments.
  • Experience supporting advanced analytics use cases.
