About Code for Canada Code for Canada is a national non-profit. We work with governments and non-profits to create digital services that are inclusive, accessible, and effective for everyone in Canada. Since 2017, we've worked with over 50 partners nationwide. We take part in local, regional, national, and international conversations about civic tech and digital government. Join our Board of Directors as Treasurer Code for Canada is looking for one new member to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer. We're especially interested in people with hands-on experience in civic tech, building digital services in the public sector, or both. As a national non-profit, we want our board to reflect the whole country. We welcome candidates from anywhere in Canada. About the board and responsibilities Code for Canada's board provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Our CEO and staff lead day-to-day operations, but the board-staff relationship is a partnership, and active board involvement is both expected and essential. We ask each board member to sit on at least one working group or task force. General responsibilities Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO and management team Guiding the development of Code for Canada's strategic plan Reviewing the outcomes and metrics staff use to evaluate impact, and regularly measuring performance against them Reviewing agendas and supporting materials ahead of board and committee meetings Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO Helping the management team and Board Chair identify and recruit other board members Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments Supporting fundraising and partnership development Representing Code for Canada to partners and acting as an ambassador for the organization Upholding Code for Canada's commitment to a diverse board and staff Treasurer responsibilities Financial oversight Monitor the organization's financial position and overall fiscal health Review and interpret financial statements, reports, and budgets Ensure accurate financial records are maintained Present financial updates to the board at regular meetings Budgeting and financial planning Support the development of the annual budget Monitor budget performance and flag significant variances Help with long-term financial planning and sustainability Recommend financial priorities and resource allocation Governance and compliance Ensure the organization meets financial policies, regulations, and reporting requirements Review and update financial policies on an annual basis Support financial controls and risk management practices Ensure appropriate policies are in place for handling funds and expenditures Banking and cash management Monitor cash flow and liquidity Review and approve financial transactions as organizational policy requires Audit and risk management Coordinate the Code for Canada team on the annual audit, and work with the auditor as needed Monitor financial risks and recommend ways to manage them Board terms and participation Board members serve two-year terms and can be reappointed for up to two additional terms, for a maximum of six years. The full board meets every two months. The executive committee meets monthly for about one hour, primarily to review financials — the Treasurer plays an active role in these meetings.

Qualifications

We're looking for someone who brings: Financial literacy and the ability to read financial statements Attention to detail and strong analytical skills Integrity and a commitment to ethical financial stewardship The ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial audiences Strategic thinking and risk awareness You must live in Canada. The following are assets: Professional experience building digital services or capabilities in a civic tech or public sector setting Prior experience at a municipal or provincial or federal government organization A commitment to Code for Canada's value proposition, with an appreciation for the technology sector, community-building, and public engagement Personal integrity, credibility, and a commitment to inclusion and collaboration Prior non-profit or charitable board leadership experience Board service is unpaid.
