Remote Big Data Engineer – Cloud Data Pipeline Development, Distributed Systems & Analytics Platform Architecture ($28/Hour)

Work from home Full-time role Hiring

About arenaflex and This Opportunity

arenaflex stands at the forefront of the global logistics and transportation technology landscape, where the seamless movement of information is just as critical as the movement of physical goods. As a world-class organization committed to operational excellence and digital innovation, arenaflex invests heavily in its data infrastructure to power intelligent decision-making across every business unit. We are seeking a talented and driven Remote Big Data Engineer to join our Dataworks platform team, where you will design, build, test, and maintain enterprise-scale data pipelines that process and transform massive volumes of structured and unstructured data. This is a fully remote position based in Washington, USA, offering the flexibility to work from home while collaborating with a globally distributed team of engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

At arenaflex, data is the engine that drives every strategic decision. Our Dataworks platform serves as the backbone of analytics, machine learning, operational reporting, and downstream product integrations. The work you do will directly influence how arenaflex optimizes its supply chain, predicts demand fluctuations, enhances customer experiences, and identifies new market opportunities. If you are passionate about large-scale data engineering, distributed computing, and building resilient data ecosystems, this role offers an unmatched opportunity to make a tangible impact.

Key Responsibilities

Core Data Engineering Duties

  • Support the design, construction, testing, and ongoing maintenance of data pipelines operating at massive data scale across the arenaflex enterprise.
  • Assist with ingesting and updating data from a wide variety of sources, including transactional databases, APIs, streaming platforms, and third-party feeds.
  • Perform batch processing of collected data, ensuring schema alignment with stored data, and confirming that information is properly staged for downstream processing and analysis.
  • Help maintain an optimized and efficient data ecosystem, monitoring standard performance, troubleshooting data-related issues, and providing L3 support when necessary.
  • Implement parsers, validators, transformers, and correlators to reformat, enrich, and elevate the quality of incoming and stored data.
  • Provide expert recommendations for highly complex technical problems and offer guidance to engineers in less senior positions.

Strategic Dataworks Platform Contributions

  • Develop the tools, platforms, and pipelines that empower teams across arenaflex to clearly and efficiently analyze data, build predictive models, and drive data-informed decisions.
  • Solve problems that scale beyond single-machine processing, evolving "PC scale" challenges into robust "cluster scale" solutions through thoughtful infrastructure design and methodological rigor.
  • Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams—including IT, business analysts, software developers, and data scientists—to generate data-driven operational insights that translate into high-value optimization initiatives.
  • Deliver tangible value quickly, partnering with diverse teams of varying technical backgrounds and business disciplines.
  • Architect best practices for future reuse, including open, reusable patterns, templates, and well-documented code bases that accelerate future development at arenaflex.
  • Partner with senior technologists from both within arenaflex and the broader partner ecosystem (vendors, clients, and external collaborators) to build synergies and ensure smooth integration with downstream operational systems.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with distributed data systems, large-scale processing frameworks, and modern data engineering toolchains.
  • Strong programming proficiency in languages commonly used in data engineering, including Python and Scala.
  • Hands-on experience with batch and stream processing technologies such as Spark (Scala and PySpark), HDFS, and Kafka.
  • Solid understanding of SQL and NoSQL storage systems, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, and ElasticSearch.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, version control systems (such as Git), and code review best practices.
  • Proven ability to deliver technical projects, often under tight time constraints while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Comfort working with distributed teams on code-based deliverables using modern collaboration and version control tools.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills Considered a Plus

  • Deep technical background in computer science, programming, database systems, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Sharp understanding of the transportation and logistics domain, with the ability to identify high-opportunity areas and design solutions that capture measurable business value.
  • Development experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Azure cloud services and data platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and operationalizing CI/CD pipelines for data and infrastructure workflows.
  • Experience developing capabilities and solutions that operate under near real-time, high-volume streaming conditions.
  • Hands-on development ability, including the capacity to dive into code, debug complex issues, and resolve hard-to-diagnose problems.
  • An "engineering mindset"—the ability to make fast, pragmatic decisions that improve performance and accelerate progress.
  • Strong DevOps orientation with working knowledge of coding, scripting, databases, YAML, JSON, and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Demonstrated expertise with the following languages, libraries, and tools:
    • Spark (Scala and PySpark), HDFS, Kafka, and other high-volume data processing frameworks.
    • SQL and NoSQL storage solutions such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, and ElasticSearch.
    • Python data tooling including Pandas, Scikit-Learn, Matplotlib, TensorFlow, and Jupyter notebooks.

Core Skills and Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Thinking: The ability to dissect complex data problems, recognize patterns, and design scalable solutions that meet both immediate and long-term business needs.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to act as a "universal translator" between IT, business stakeholders, programmers, and data scientists.
  • Adaptability: Comfort navigating ambiguity, evolving requirements, and shifting priorities in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
  • Ownership and Accountability: A self-directed approach to delivering high-quality work while mentoring junior team members.
  • Continuous Learning: A passion for staying current with emerging data technologies, cloud platforms, and engineering best practices.
