The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is responsible for providing leadership and support to education entities in Michigan. The Financial Analyst in the Office of Educational Supports will analyze and maintain data related to federal and state grant allocations, ensuring the effective distribution of substantial educational funds to local agencies and schools.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing, reviewing, and maintaining data to calculate allocations for federal and state formula grant programs
  • Supporting the distribution of over $890,000,000 in federal and state funds to local education agencies, intermediate education agencies, and charter schools
  • Providing financial assistance and knowledge pertaining to federal and state regulations governing the allocation of funds
  • Analyzing and supporting the expenditure process for grant funds including reviewing the draw down process for federal funding and analyzing financial data related to office spend plans

Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in any major with at least 12 semester (18 term) credits in accounting, finance, or economics
  • At least one year of post-degree professional experience providing a systematic review, analysis, interpretation, and/or evaluation of budgets, mortgages, loans, or other financial data, equivalent to a Financial Analyst
  • Experience in creating and documenting processes, procedures, and/or workflows
  • Experience preparing and tracking budgets and compiling and interpreting financial data
  • Experience using advanced functions and features in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience managing, supporting, or implementing State and/or Federal grants, including experience with the application process and regulations related to State and Federal funding
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, financial and non-financial information

  • Employees in the guard or reserves may also qualify for supplemental pay benefits if military pay during qualifying duty is less than normal state pay.
  • Prior military service may also allow seniority credits to accelerate eligibility for longevity bonuses and additional personal leave accrual.
