As part of its commitment to flexible work arrangements, arenaflex offers fully remote positions that empower top talent to thrive from any location in the United States while contributing to high‑impact projects that shape the future of the industry.

Why This Role Matters

In the rapidly evolving world of data‑driven entertainment, the Senior Data Engineer is the cornerstone of arenaflex’s Item Execution and Instrumentation Group. This team is responsible for building and maintaining the data pipelines that feed critical business insights, support customer‑facing applications, and enable the seamless delivery of content across all arenaflex brands. As a senior engineer, you will design scalable architectures, mentor junior talent, and partner with product owners to translate business needs into robust, high‑performance data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect & Build Data Solutions: Design, develop, and maintain end‑to‑end data pipelines using Scala, Python, and Spark in both cloud (AWS) and on‑premise environments.
  • Lakehouse Engineering: Lead the migration toward a Lakehouse‑driven data platform, collaborating with data product owners to define schemas, partitioning strategies, and governance policies.
  • ETL Development at Scale: Create resilient ETL processes that handle terabytes of data daily, ensuring data quality, latency, and uptime meet strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Technology Stack Stewardship: Champion best practices for AWS services (S3, EMR, EC2), Snowflake, Databricks, Delta Lake, and streaming technologies such as Kafka (referred to as “Wind Stream” in legacy documentation).
  • Collaboration & Communication: Partner with Data Product Managers, Data Architects, and Business Analysts to translate requirements into technical designs, and communicate progress through clear documentation and regular scrum updates.
  • Performance Optimization: Conduct root‑cause analysis of pipeline bottlenecks, implement indexing, caching, and parallel processing techniques to improve throughput and reduce cost.
  • Automation & Cost Efficiency: Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, streamline data validation, and reduce operational spend while maintaining compliance with security standards.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Guide junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of continuous learning and agile improvement within the team.
  • Customer Support Integration: Work closely with the Customer Support analytics team to ensure data feeds support real‑time dashboards, ticket resolution metrics, and proactive customer experience initiatives.
  • Documentation & Governance: Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, data lineage diagrams, and metadata catalogs to support data stewardship and audit requirements.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale data pipelines in a production environment.
  • Proficiency in Scala and Python, with a deep understanding of functional programming concepts.
  • Strong SQL skills; ability to write complex queries, optimize execution plans, and design performant data models.
  • Extensive experience with AWS services, particularly S3, EMR, EC2, and IAM for secure data access.
  • Demonstrated expertise with at least one major MPP or cloud data warehouse technology (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar).
  • Hands‑on experience with Spark (including PySpark) and Databricks for distributed data processing.
  • Familiarity with streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis, or “Wind Stream”) and real‑time data ingestion patterns.
  • Solid understanding of data lakehouse concepts, Delta Lake architecture, and best practices for data governance.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, with a track record of delivering within sprint cycles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence cross‑functional teams and articulate technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Master’s degree or advanced certifications in Cloud Architecture (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, SnowPro Core, etc.).
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines for data engineering workloads.
  • Knowledge of data modeling techniques for both OLTP and OLAP systems.
  • Background in customer support analytics, including familiarity with ticketing systems (Zendesk, ServiceNow) and real‑time reporting dashboards.
  • Exposure to machine learning pipelines and feature store implementations.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives that result in measurable cost savings or performance improvements.

Core Competencies & Personal Attributes

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to break down complex problems, apply algorithmic thinking, and devise elegant solutions.
  • Detail Orientation: Commitment to high data quality, thorough documentation, and adherence to governance standards.
  • Collaboration: Strong team player who thrives in a remote, distributed environment and actively contributes to a positive scrum culture.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating ambiguous requirements and rapidly shifting priorities in a fast‑paced industry.
  • Customer‑Centric Focus: Understanding of how data impacts end‑user experiences and a drive to deliver insights that improve satisfaction.
  • Continuous Learning: Passion for staying current with emerging data technologies, cloud services, and industry trends.
