About the position The Associated Entity Accountant position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a vital role within the School of Government, which is dedicated to enhancing the lives of North Carolinians through practical scholarship. This position is responsible for the financial management and accounting functions of the School of Government Foundation, Inc. and School of Government Services, Inc. These associated entities play a crucial role in the School's overall budget, managing over $30 million in assets and generating $6 million in annual revenues. The Accountant will oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, prepare and analyze financial statements, coordinate year-end audits, and manage tax return preparations. This role serves as the primary financial liaison for the School's associated entities, requiring the ability to develop and implement new procedures while adapting to changing systems to minimize risk and ensure compliance. In addition to the technical accounting responsibilities, the Accountant will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Business and Finance to provide financial advice to the School's leadership team, the Advancement team, and the respective Boards of Directors for each entity. The position demands strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative spirit, as the Accountant will interact with various stakeholders to ensure effective financial management and reporting. The role may also offer a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a partially remote work location, in line with the System Office policy. Employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and carry out all day-to-day accounting functions for the School of Government Foundation and School of Government Services.

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Coordinate the year-end audit process and manage tax return preparations.

  • Act as the primary financial liaison for the School's associated entities, providing support and guidance.

  • Develop and implement new accounting procedures to minimize risk and ensure compliance with regulations.

  • Advise the School's leadership team and Boards of Directors on financial management and reporting matters.

  • Monitor budgets and interpret federal and state regulatory guidelines.

Requirements

  • Mid- to late-career with a Master's degree and 2-4 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of experience in accounting or finance.

  • Experience with accounting and financial management, particularly in a non-profit setting.

  • Ability to develop and monitor budgets and interpret federal and state regulatory guidelines.

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with excellent written and oral communication abilities.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and complex projects effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Self-starter with a positive outlook and understanding of the School of Government's audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Degree in Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is highly preferred.

  • Experience in audit coordination and working with external auditors.

  • Experience in higher education or knowledge of university policies and procedures.

  • Strong analytical skills for financial reporting and analysis, including the ability to prepare complex financial reports.

  • Knowledge of internal controls and experience in compliance and risk management.

  • Proficiency in financial management software, specifically Quickbooks and Peoplesoft, as well as Microsoft Excel and Tableau.
