Recreation Supervisor-Sports Emphasis

The Recreation Supervisor plans and implements a variety of preschool, youth and adult sports programs, youth and adult recreation programs, and special events. The Recreation Supervisor works closely with other similar positions to implement recreation programs for people of all abilities. Focus Area: Position primary focus area is preschool, youth and adult sports programming focusing on enhancing the role of sports and recreation as a component of community vitality for Edina residents. Focus areas include:

  • Preschool & youth sports classes, leagues and camps
  • Adult sports and leagues
  • Wellness and health initiatives and special events
  • Facility and field scheduling
  • Winter ice skating/warming houses
  • Liaison to youth athletic associations

Scope of Impact: The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and Local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of Department operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides approval by or input on recommendations, and discusses assignments, priorities, and work. The Recreation Supervisor exercises supervisory authority over several year-round part-time and seasonal employees.

  • Supervises the development and maintenance of the City’s recreation programs.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, promotes and implements a variety of recreation programs, including marketing of programs, creating budgets and schedules, facilitating registrations, scheduling facilities and coordinating use of City and non-City facilities;
  • Co-directs general recreation programs, services and special events;
  • Evaluates and recommends purchases of equipment and supplies;
  • Hires, trains, and supervises program leaders, confers with staff members on program and content, gives advice on problems of technique, and evaluates staff effectiveness;
  • Evaluates programs, organization and staffing and make recommendations which may improve economy, efficiency and quality of operation;
  • Serves as advisor to and attends board meetings of youth athletic associations, as assigned;
  • Drafts, updates and prepares reports, letters, news releases, brochures, and other documents;
  • Provides information to and answers questions from program attendees and the general public via telephone, email, mail or in-person;
  • Enters data into database and maintains records.
  • Provides supervision and leadership to seasonal staff.
  • Provides training and work direction;
  • Recommends hiring, termination, and promotions;
  • Sets goals and objectives and monitors performance of direct reports;
  • Conducts ongoing feedback, coaching, mentoring and timely performance reviews.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
  • Represents the City to the community, with stakeholders and on various committees;
  • Communicates with others relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work-related needs.
  • Maintains professional competence and stays abreast of trends and innovations.
  • Attends training, conferences and meetings and reviews relevant literature.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration or closely related field.
  • Two years of experience in Park and Recreation management, including supervisory experience, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience coordinating youth and adult sports programs and events.
  • A valid driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 4 years experience coordinating youth and adult sports programs and events.
  • Experience working with youth athletic associations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for Successful Job Performance:

  • Knowledge of governmental processes and policies;
  • Knowledge of competitive market pricing for comparable recreation programs;
  • Knowledge of budgeting terminology and techniques;
  • The ability to perform work requiring a high degree of concentration and judgment in interpreting practices and procedures to solve problems;
  • The ability to work independently and to prioritize work requests;
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate standard office software sufficient to manipulate data, draft reports and maintain records;
  • Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively present information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, including residents and community groups, and reading comprehension skills sufficient to read, understand and interpret varied work-related materials;
  • Demonstrates the desired standard of conduct and work performance including confidentiality and privacy requirements of the Department;
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Physical effort is generally light, with lifting or carrying limited to 25 pounds intermittently, including lifting a small child. During summer months, the employee will be in the field at various program activities, which may require standing and running for intermittent periods, and in normal or inclement weather. Report preparation and writing will at times require extended use of a keyboard. Work interruptions are frequent. Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a normal office environment. Work during the evening and on weekends is occasionally required.
